Some pianists play the blues. Others seem
to have a personal argument with the keys. Katie Webster belonged to the second
category. In this episode of Flash Blues, we travel to Germany, where she
recorded 200% Joy! for Ornament Records in 1983. An album proving that you
don't need a big band when you have a powerful voice, a piano, and plenty to
say.
Katie was once Otis Redding's protégé and brought her talent to hundreds of
Bayou blues recordings. After years away from the spotlight, she returned with
the energy of someone who still had unfinished business with the blues.
Our Track of the Day is Rockin’ The Subway, a short, direct, and energetic
instrumental. A tribute to pianos, clubs, and musicians who never stop playing.
Turn up the volume and let the Queen of Swamp Boogie speak through her keys.
